Been a while since I've done Boiler...tonight was pretty bad too. I went up with some new stuff and got 0, nada, zilch. No feedback, must've been something i said.
This is a personal blog / diary of my experiences being a stand up comedian. Most of the entries take place in the Portland Oregon / Pacific NW area.

Daily Double
I am the host and headliner for this shindig and I start the show right around 9. I do 5 minutes up front and introduce the other comedians one by one. Then it comes time for my closing set. I do about 20 minutes that no one was paying attention to and thanked everyone for being there. Pretty standard stuff.

Helium
Open mic at Helium...classic tuesday. I went up with some new bit about stealing cars and it crushed. I am satisfied.

Dublin Down
Tonight I performed in a small pub in Vancouver called the Dublin Down. This was a long and narrow bar right off main street downtown Vancouver. Cool location, and cool crowd too!
This was one of the best shows in recent memory, everyone had amazing sets! The crowd was just with it from start to finish. I def hope thy did this show again! I headlined and did about 30 mins at the end and it was a lot of fun. New shit old shit...it was all hitting!

Triple show night
Today is very exciting because I have 3 shows. First one is The Brunchening, hosted by Trevor an The Doug Fir Lounge. This is a beautiful venue that I've had the pleasure of performing at before during Bridgetown. I go up right in the middle and do about 18 solid minutes. I really felt like I captured the audience's attention from start to finish. Great show with great friends. Bonus: afterwards we went next door to play some pinball and I found a $20 bill in the ATM!
2nd show is hosted at Proof. This is a small bar that I have performed in many a times, & I go up first. I deliver a solid 15 minute set and then immediately leave for my 3rd show.
I get to the third show about 830, this is at the Hutch Tavern which is a new spot I have never been in. The show started at 8 & I walk in had a pretty good time. I go up about 15 minutes after I get there. I deliver another very solid and feel like I really destroyed this room.
This was a great Saturday for me. I did 3 sets and I feel like I killed all three of them.

Brody Theater
It's weird to walk into a place I used to frequent and not recognize half of the people in the room. I'm old in the comedy scene now, 4+ years into it. I'm glad I've gotten to a place where I am comfortable calling myself a comic and people in the city know who I am. I was def the ... and I hate to use this term... but "biggest" comic in the room that night. I'm not a "big" comic, I'm not a diva, I am just a guy who has kept at it and gotten to be a regular at both clubs...I went back and read some of my first posts on this blog and it really brings back a lot of memories. I used to be an open mic exclusive... Now Im opening up for Dave Attell to sold out crowds at the coolest club in town. When did this happen?
Anyways... My set at Brody was "meh". I went up there with a ballpark idea on what I wanted to talk about, and it was topical, just something I wanted to get off my chest. This wasn't so much a set as it was me just venting a little. Still productive. Afterwards, I hit up the arcade and played pinball and then went to a karaoke bar and sang The Cure. Love life.

Helium Radio Show
Tonight, I'm performing at helium with 3 other comedians for a small radio sponsored show. Its at Helium , a venue that I am very familiar with. The show however, I'm not so sure.
I figured the three radio DJ's would open the show so I waited in the green room. To my surprise, I was introduced as the host and MC, before the radio DJs even took the stage. I did not know what to do, so I rushed on stage a little frazzled and addressed the audience just like I would any other host job.
Set went well, but about 10 minutes into my 15 minutes set, another comedian walked up the side of the stage and handed me a drink with a note. Obviously the note was the real reason for him to be there.
The note basically said that I was supposed to introduce the three radio DJ's next instead of a comedian. But it startled me and caught me off guard, I ended up ending my set pretty abruptly because I thought the note was in a "get off stage now, you're fucking up" context. Was I supposed to introduce the three radio DJ's immediately? Have I been on stage for 10 minutes when I should have only been on for 1? A lot of thoughts went racing through my mind.
I brought the three radio DJs up and even screwed up one of their names. Real classy. Luckily they played it off well, and besides the really awkward ending, my set was ok. Its just you remember the bad things.
I felt real bad after that for a while. Then I listened to Andrew WK, smoked some weed, and felt much better.

Helium Week
This has been the best week in my career. I got to open for Dave Attell. Dave Attell. Fucking Dave Attell. 2 shows Fri and Sat, all sold out.
First 3 shows I did different material, trying to stretch my legs on stage at Helium. Every show was just... amazing. The crowds ate up everything I said. Right off the bat they are on board with me. The 4th show I used my fave jokes from the first 3 and tried to make a "best of". That actually was what I felt the weakest set too... But still fucking great.
It feels good to be in a place where I can put together 3 different sets on the fly and really excel with all of them. As have a lot of solid material now and I need to dial in a strong 30 for featuring.

Rialto Corner Bar
I pull up to the Rialto at 930 and get a spot right at the front door, VIP parking. That alone gives me good vibes for the show, but I have another ace up my sleeve, mushrooms. I did not eat a lot of mushrooms but enough to give me a good buzz.
I get on stage for the 8 people that are in the audience and just let loose. Total free form set where I'm just spitting s*** out as fast as I can.
Really felt like I had a strong 20 minutes in there tonight. I hope the people in the audience felt the same way. And the people behind the curtain on the slot machines... they were there too.

Dirty Dozen
This was the best Dirty Dozen showcase ever! Sold out show! The audience was large, and on board for everything.
I did about 8 minutes out front and it went really really well. I started off with a story of a recent date that was terrible, segue into my other dating material, and segued is that into my dirty talk material and finally segued that into my choke f****** bit. Everything flowed really really well. I'm very happy with this show.
Though, I'll be honest I should have ended my set there but I got greedy and told one more joke . My Anne Frank joke. It went fine, it just didnt hit as hard as everything else.
You live and you learn

Tap That
This is an unfamiliar room to me. It's a small bar located right off the sidewalk, the entire side of the bar is a giant roll up garage door that's left open on nice days. I like it. Very spacious and open feeling with the garage door up.
3 comic showcase. Standard stuff. I am the feature this time, and headlining is my good friend Don Frost.
What makes this show memorable is I met a girl there. A woman from the internet. I told her to meet me at the show. The show was okay, I did pretty good. Afterwards she told me she was walking across the street to the karaoke bar with her roommates and I should come hang out. So I did. Within 5 minutes I could tell that this was going nowhere because we just didn't have anything in common. Normally I would have excused myself but since I was at the karaoke bar I wanted to sing and I did not want to get up and just go to another table, that would be awkward right? Luckily another guy at the bar recognized her from the internet and came and talked to her. They really hit it off and within 5 minutes they were making out on the other side of the table from me and her roommates. Not awkward at all.
Bleachers
Tonight Im in beaverton. I'm at a small sports bar called bleachers,. It is a rough room. One of the comics doesn't show up so its just three of us. I am headlining the show as well and I watch the host and feature both have pretty terrible sets. Not terrible on their part, just that the crowd was small and not into it that much.
I go up and actually have a fairly fun time. There were a few people that just were not laughing at anything I said, so I got really dark on them and enjoyed it for myself. I ended up doing 38 minutes and that time flew by. Once I started having fun with the set it was over.
Afterwards the bar owner approached me and told me I was the best comic he's ever seen. I'm sure he tells that to everyone, but it still felt nice
Brody Theater
I'm at the classic Brody theater. This is where I first started, and now I'm back to headline a small showcase with my friends! It's a really good lineup, and there's probably 40 people in the audience, which is a lot for this small venue.
My friends all go up and do very well. It's a long show, it's about an hour and a half deep before I take the stage, but the audience is still on board till the end. There were some old people there, and my first instinct is they are not going to like the show... I was wrong. They were totally on board, it was nice seeing some 50 year old dudes loving my shit. Afterwards a couple of them came up to me and told me if I ever make it up there way (British Columbia) to let them know. Nice gesture.

Nics Bar and Grill
Here I am back in Amboy Washington with my friend Jeremiah for another show. I'm featuring again doing about 30 minutes and I'm very confident walking on stage. There was a solid 100+ people there tonight, they rearranged the seating to accommodate more.
I woke up and was pretty solid right at the start. Opening up with some riff about the owner of the bar and he was eating it up! Afterwards I did a quick one liner that I thought of about 10 minutes beforehand and it killed! Then I talked about my day for 7 minutes and I got a solid response nothing groundbreaking. Afterwards I had about 20 minutes left, I used classics as well as some new shit cause i dont want to repeat everything from the last set obviously.
Afterwards there was one woman who is very obviously hating me. Shooting me the stink eye for an hour after my set. When she finally approached me she told me I wasn't funny and I just shrugged and said I don't care and walked away. It felt so good to see her getting even matter when I just brush her off. Haters gonna hate.

Boiler
It is a very light room tonight. Only 15 or so comics sign up. Still a good audience, I see good sets from a few new faces. This scene is blowing up fast, and I'm enjoying it.
Nothing special tonight, a decent set for a decent crowd. I left right afterwards went home and was asleep by 11. Old man status
Tonic
All good things must come to an end they say. Unfortunately this is the last open mic at Tonic lounge, and I am happy to be here. Everybody is here, it is a packed house.
The mic starts after the showcase and I go up 6th-ish. My set wasnt pretty, I'll be honest. Did some new jokes, and mostly got stared at. Kind of a classic Tonic lounge moment really... Afterwards I hung out till about midnight, shot the shit with my friends and headed home.

Double Dippin... again....
2 open mic tonight. One at helium, and one at Brody Theater.
The crowd of helium is tight, not laughing for anyone, I address it right at the start of my set. I go up and start talking shit about how terrible this crowd is and they warm up to that. Then I launched into my new bit about a girl who dumped me in middle school. It got a fairly good response as well. I left the stage pretty satisfied and headed off to Brody.
Brody was pretty sparse. Only a couple comics made up the audience, and there was maybe 20 at most. I went up to the host and asked if I could get put on early, and he hooks me up. I was in and out of there in less than 30 minutes, which is nice. I did my dirty dozen bit about mothers killing their kids and I got a pretty good response out of this crowd. All in all a pretty productive night for me.
Double Dippin...
Jade Lounge is a small intimate little bar with high ceilings and low lighting, like an opium den. Jonas is a great promoter and the place fills up before showtime, maybe 30 people in this small room. I go up 3rd cause I have to leave early. The crowd is pretty tight for the first 2 comics, so I go up with a fuck it attitude and just get down to it. They eat it up. Right off the bat, my new pussy eating joke is getting love, and it continues through the set, I only hit a couple flat spots, but all in all, great set! I leave a happy camper and head off to Boar of Gods...
...Bar of Gods has a new show I am on called "Vs. the Wheel" in which comics do 10 minutes. the first 5 are regular, then the 2nd 5 are in a style selected by spinning a giant digital wheel projected on a screen behind you. Lots of topics you can get. I got "news reporter" in which I had to do the last half of my set like I was a new reporter...pretty self explanitory. I did ok...this def wasnt as good as my Jade set but I was practicing for my Dirty Dozen Showcase tomorrow and did some r rated stuff. My new bit about mothers killing their kids is coming along nicely.

Nics Bar and Grille
This. Crowd. Was. Awesome. They ate all my shit up, I got a bunch of applause breaks and left with a smile. Even my newest "mothers who kill their kids" bit was given an applause! This crowd like clean and rough stuff and I feel like I am firing on all cylinders tonight!
I ended up getting called the next day and invited back to feature on the next show! These are my people, I will be back for the next show and cant wait to see them again!
New Deal Distillery
The lineup is packed, as are most Portland shows nowadays. I ended up closing out the show, which was not the original plan, but the headliner had to dip out early so I got the honors. By the time I got on stage the crowd had seen 90 minutes of solid comedy. Tim Hammer crushed so hard, he was on top of his game tonight. The crowd was on board for my entire set as well, start to finish. I did about 15 minutes and it just flew by, I wish I coulda done more.
This was a great was to spend a Friday night.

The Old Barn
This is a new show case for me. I got called last minute to fill in for the headliner. It feels nice when someone has enough faith in you to call you to headline a show like this last minute.
I show up and its a nice sized bar. Flat screens line the wood paneled walls, and theres a few lottery machines begging for attention as well. No stage but a nice sound system and spotlight. I can dig it.
I go up last and do about 40 minutes. It felt pretty solid. I got to work out some new material and played around with some old old stuff for gits and shiggles. All in all, im very glad to have been here tonight.

Helium
Tonight I went up with some really dark material in prep for the Dirty Dozen Showcase coming up. I started off with a bit about mothers who have killed their kids (did ok) and closed with a sad but true story of heartbreak and triumph in 6th grade. I need to work on both stories but I have a solid foundation for the DD show. Im a happy camper right now.

Bare Bones Bar
Everyone eats shit, as is expected.I go up and fare no better. I decide to just go dark for the sake of going dark tonight. I pull out some new material and a few old ones that I havent worked in a couple years. Silence. Its like doing my set in my bathroom. I can handle that.

Capitol City Theater
We decided order in a completely random way. By selecting a color of candy out of 3 and then throwing them against the wall to see who's color bounced back the furthest. Ricketts idea, and he ended up getting the headline spot via his rules. And I dont mean that in a bad way either, he didnt wana headline but I held him to the rules of his "game". He killed.
I did about 20 minutes for the 15 or so people that were in the room. It went well and everybody seem to enjoy it very much. Jason Traeger went second and did great as usual. And Christian Ricketts closed the show with about 30 minutes of his amazing material. Good times were had.

Helium Contest Semis
I go up 8th, and I feel like the audience is pretty tight. I don't feel like my set was as good as my first round, but still felt solid. I really worked on my set for a nice solid five and a half minutes, and win or lose, I'm glad I got to perform.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a nervous wreck while I wait for the results. Everybody had such killer sets tonight, this is gonna be a close race. It took them a very long time to count the scores to, at least 30 minutes. It was so close! But there's good news, I advanced! Wow, 4 years of doing the contest and I finally broke into the finals. I was feeling pretty awesome afterwards and hit up Tonic to see some of my friends. Then I went home, played some counter-strike and went to bed.
Solid end to a solid night.
Jade Lounge
This was a new show for me. Its right down the street from where I live, in a small lounge that looks like an opium den. Really cool vibes in here.
Only to audience members showed up, and there were about 10 comics. A lot of people who I haven't seen in awhile so that was nice. I had a pretty decent set all things considered, and I stuck around to watch the rest of the show.
Nathan really blew me away with a bunch of new, deep stuff. He will take the hardest parts of his life and make them into very uplifting stories. That inspires me.
Also, great salad rolls here.
Instant Comedy
Im 1 of the 3 comedians doing a 10 minutes set up front. I am the third comedian, and I go up with my Helium contest set to work the kinks out. The crowd is tight, they aren't laughing very much for anyone, but I did get a few applause breaks out of them.
After my set I go back out to the lounge and watch the rest of the show. All 5 instant comics did really well. It's amazing how they can come up with such brilliant material in such a short time. Curtis really blew me away with his Frozen bit, that man is a genius.
That was a great way to spend a weeknight

Gators
Tonight I am at a small sports bar in Tigard Oregon. Pretty generic, with 40 inch plasma screens lining the walls, each one with a different sport playing. The crowd is not too big when it starts but takes up near the end.
I'm headlining tonight! It's a very good lineup and I'm honored to share this stage, much less finish the show. When I go out there is about 15 people in the bar, and when I finish at about 45. A big group of people walking right around the middle of my set and they seem to really enjoy it. I got about 35 minutes, and didn't hit any super slow spots. I'm feeling really good about my set getting dialed in.
Afterwards a couple of people wanted to talk to me to tell me how much they liked my set. I gave out a few business cards and got a few Twitter followers from the night...yay social media. And this place also has an awesome menu. Their bottle cap burger was the shit. Definitely a great Sunday night. I hope to be back here again soon!

Helium Contest Round 1
I went out second. Which is a rough spot in a line up of 10, so I had to bring the heat. I felt great after my set, did two jokes in 5 minutes and walked off comfortably. Then I watched the other a comedians kill after me, they all did great as well! The comedy scene in this town is amazing. I wasn't sure I would advance after seeing the show so I was nervous when they called us all back on stage. But good news, I won! & I will be heading to the second round on July 8!

Elk Valley Casino
this is my first gig in California! And I'm on the road with another comic named DC Malone who is a super chill guy. It's about five and a half hour car ride, through some very beautiful winding roads that take you through the giant redwood forests of northern Calif.
We get to the casino, it's pretty small, but the inside is a very nice. We ended up getting a flat tire right in the parking lot of the casino. Let me tell you, the staff at this casino goes above and beyond. One of the security guards changed our tire, took our old one back to his house, fixed it, filled it with air and then brought it back so we were right back on the road after our gig. They also fed us like kings. I've never had steak and lobster before, & I probably never will again. And they gave us two pieces of pie! Two!
Let's talk about the show itself, about 100 people were in the room and I was the first one up. I did a little over 30 minutes I really had them going hard from the beginning to the middle of my set, they were all on board. A lot of good crowd work, they were loving my butt stuff. But my closer did not hit as hard as I wanted to and I kind of floundered. I ended up telling about 5 more minutes of jokes trying to recover but it never happened. And I closed on my long hair bit which I've never closed on, and never will again. Still a great set, but you always remember how it ends haha. The crowd still love me, they were all talking to me after the show so definitely a great experience for me. I hope to come back to this casino soon!
Helium
Tonight I am performing with a dozen other comedians in the first round of Portland's funniest comic contest. I am super excited, and can't wait ticket on stage and win this crowd over.
I am the second,, which isn't the best spot but I'm going to do my best regardless. I go out there and do my favorite new joke, cause I hate repeating jokes in the contest. I go with my Embers and homeless bit. They go over fantastic. For some reason I got really nervous and ended up cussing a lot more than I had wanted to, which kinda bums me out cuz I wanted to get a good tape but there's always next round cuz guess what? I won!
It feels great to go into a room full of strangers and win them over. I only brought one person with me, so this first round means a lot to me to advance. I feel like I'm on a roll right now, let's hope this doesn't stop.

Tonic Lounge
Ahhh Tonic Lounge. This is the new classic spot in Portland and I am so glad to be on this show. Also it's like a half a mile from my house, what are the odds? A beautiful small theatre posted on the back half of a very unassuming dive bar. This bar has possibly the worst parking lot however, but it works.
The lineup is stacked, as always. Everytime I look at the talent we have in Portland I'm blown away. I'm glad to be able to perform with such funny people. I go up second to last and in about 15 minutes. A lot of brand new stuff, I had had a creative streak and had to get everything out. Most of it hit fairly well too! The stuff about pictures of naked children... A hit! Well not really a hit, but I know I can work on it make it better. And that's what comedy is all about after all, making it better.
Dirty Dozen 3.0
This is the third installment of the dirty dozen showcase at helium and I am excited as ever. The show it was fantastic from start to finish. Everyone slaughtered. Don Frost was an exceptional stand out, as you would expect. And Amy Miller absolutely crushed with a brilliant story about fucking a Baltimore Raven. I am jealous.
715 Club
This room turned out to be quite a delight. It is a very small and dark venue. It might sleep 20 at most. I get to book it, and this is the first show with myself, Cody McCullar, and Don headlining. No microphone, no spotlight, no problem. It became a free-form storytelling show, and we all got to utilize some hand gesturing and other miming that we're not used to.
8 people came to the show, and 2 others walked in about half way through and stayed till the end. I did 15 minutes up front, got the crowd fairly warm and introduced Cody. He did a full 30 minutes had a great time, & I got back up and introduced Don. Done like a champion, did an entire 45 minutes and killed it. He pulled up a stool close to the small audience and just did a little story telling with his hand on his knee like an old man. His whole set was just free form, and genius. The two people that showed up right when he started stayed, they were flight attendants from I don't even know where.
I look forward to doing this show again, hopefully the freeform storytelling vibe can continue.

Als Den
Bridgetown!
First show was a young guns best of Portland type showcase held at analog theater. I went up with some familiar faces and some out of towners from Seattle, in front of a a medium sized crowd. It was a Thursday, so I wasn't expecting a sold out show. It's a wonderful venue or too, giant green room, and nice large stage upstairs. The smaller but still very nice stage downstairs in the cafe. Great show.
Friday I was at the Hawthorne lounge primetime show with a bunch of people I have never gotten to work with before. And Ayggie Smith, he ended the show with with a closer that no one will ever forget. The man's a professional. Afterwards I headed over to host the tanker open mic for an hour. This place was absolutely packed, 100 plus people crammed in this tiny bar and just watching a rotation of amazing comics one after another, never ending... Truly an amazing spectacle!
Saturday I got the privilege of performing at the Doug Fir lounge on the midnight show. This venue is by far my favorite place. Everything's gotta ambient yellow glow to it, and looks like a log cabin...really chill. Also a packed crowd, 60 ish people love and everything that everyone was saying. Then I headed over to the after party at the Jupiter hotel, and ate mushrooms and watched Genesis on YouTube at 5 in the morning... Typical Saturday right?
Then Sunday, my last so, I was at the White Owl primetime show. Definitely the most sparsely attended show I was on that week, but still a good turnout. I had fun trying out some new jokes and shooting from the hip. I got to work with a Seattle comic named David Zoe Leon on that showcase as well, that guy is a riot.

CI bar and grille
This is a pretty typical suburb sports bar. Lotto machines, neon beer signs and televisions line the wood panelled walls. Pretty packed audience, mostly older but super into comedy. My set went well, 15 minutes, most jokes hit, especially my bottled piss bit. I feel like I played the room like a pro, stick and move, stick and move!

Eagles Lodge
Well look at me now...Ive made it! Standing on this stage in front of all 6 of these elderly....follow your dreams.
Seriously though, I got to this venue and knew it was gonna be bad times. Only 12 people there, all 65+, and not caring about comedy. They were all super friendly though, and respectful. I did 30 minutes and got a few laughs at my dirtiest material of all things. About 10 minutes into my set I knew it wasnt going anywhere so I just went dirty...they liked it! Yay old people!
Alberta Street Pub
Alberta Street Pub, I love this room, small with a great atmosphere for comedy. Joanne does a great job hosting too!
I went up and did a lot of new material, nothing more that 2 months old. It went pretty ok. A lot of my new stuff needs work but the premises are sound.
Lake stevens
This was supposed to be a good time. Me and Don Frost in Washington. But the gods werent on board. 3 hours into our trip my car overheated and shut off. I had to miss the gig.
Luckiky Don had connections in Tacoma. Good people too. They picked us up, gave us a place to sleep, fed us, and then they towed me and my car all the way back to Portland! They really hooked me up big time. Good people still exist.
Now I gotta fix my car though :(

Bar of Gods
Well this show started 2 hours late because of the playoffs (damn sports) but had a couple fun comedians from Seattle. I headlined in front of a handful of people and actually had a pretty rad set. I also worked out some new shit so Im feeling productive.

Dirty Dozen Showcase
Fucking amazing show tonight! 180ish people in the crowd, 100% with it! I took a couple pics with some new fans, and even signed some autographs! I feel like I am really starting to establish myself as a serious comedian. All these small steps are adding up!

Permanent Comedy
Tonight I get to do a 15 minute set on stage at Helium Comedy Club for my friend Todd Armstrong's Permanent Comedy Showcase. Its a good crowd with about a hundred people showing up. And the great line up with some good friends of mine and some out of towners from Seattle.
Let's just cut right to it, my set felt fantastic! This crowd was on board right from the start. I opened up with my Bible bit and I add it up, and then I just continued to get laughs at every tag or line that I dished out. Even my weaker stuff got huge appla I closed on my new homeless bit, which is becoming my favorite new closer. I'm glad I recorded this set, & I look forward to the video! This is going to be a good 15 minute highlight reel thanks to the great audience!

Dirty Dozen
Time for the second Dirty Dozen showcase at helium! I spent most of the day preparing my set for the show and I am super excited to give it to the audience. It's brutal.
The show starts right on time at 8 p.m., & I go up and start my set. I had prepared 15 minutes for my intro, but apparently I was only supposed to do 7 so I had to end it early. Kinda sucks, cause I wanted to end on my new homeless bit but I still went off with a bang. My joke about the make-a-wish foundation hit really hard, I was super happy about that. This is a dirty show afterall so the audience knew what they were in for, and I went pretty hardcore.
All the comedians went up and had great sets as well, the audience left happy. I ended up taking off couple of pictures with some new friends and even getting a few numbers.. holla! I left that show feeling like a rockstar! And afterwards I went to tonic lounge and watched a cool comedy drag show. Portland.

Midnight Mass
Midnight Mass us the best showcase in Portland. This is the 4th time Ive done this show and even though I had a fairly terrible set, I still had a blast. Not much to say, I went up at 1:40am and the crowd was tired as balls. One awesome thing to note, Jovan and Just Lawson arr visting for the weekend, and seeing them again was grest! They are so funny it hurts. I expect big things from both of them in the future!

Bar of Gods
I did not even realize I was on this so tell a couple hours ago. It's a fun little show, held at bar of the gods. A small, dark room, that holds about 20, about 10 showed up. I hung out in the back with my friend David and waited for my turn.
This was a very rough set for me, the first 10 or so minutes felt like an hour. But the last half was much better. I actually ended on an applause break, so I guess it wasn't all bad. All the comics had a rough time, so I will say the audience sucked this time.

Chinese Village
back at Chinese village. A familiar room, this is the third time I've been here. Tonight I am featuring. Headlining is Bryan Cook, the inventor of competitive erotic fanfiction, and all around bad ass.
There is a strong number of people in the room too! Probably 20 people showed up to watch, which is big for this small room. I went out and about 15 minutes, everything went pretty well the last few minutes or more rough than the start but the crowd still was rad. Then I watch Brian Cook do his thing. That man has got some great material, 6 year old dead Tetris kids makes me laugh so hard. Definitely a great night

Proof....
Tonight I get the pleasure of performing in a new room my friend Tristiant set up. It's a very small bar right off Hawthorne, it can hold about 40 maybe. My friend Pete from my old GC days showed up too! This is the first time he has seen me perform. I feel kinda bad about it, I would rather him see me doing a "real" set at a club, but this will do.
The show starts about 30 minutes late, the host finally shows up right before we were going to start without him. He did about 10 minutes out front and then brings me out. By the way I am the only comic on the bill who actually showed up to perform. I do about 25 minutes, and it goes so tell. I was doing some dark stuff and some new stuff, and the crowd was pretty rough. A lot of my "classic" jokes did not hit and I had to just push forward. I still had a great time regardless though, I got some decent laugh and Tristan was a great host.
I stuck around for a little bit of open mic, but now I'm getting so old in this comedy game I did not recognize another face in there for the open mic. But that's how the businesses, its a revolving door...
Late Night....
I I head lined my friends late night talk show this evening. It was in a new space in the action adventure theater. A smaller room, but with really cool lighting and windows behind the stage. It was very open and airy feeling, seemed like new construction. There was no microphone for the show, but it was a small room so it worked out. They ended up selling the place out, about 25 people, very good audience!
I did a couple quick one liners to start, and told my hospital story early on. It's a dark story but I wanted to make a call back to my drumset later. I had fun with the audience as well, there was a very beautiful couple and I played on them for a while. Good stuff. I ended on my new homeless bit which I am loving.

Valentines
Monday night, & I get to do a little showcase with my friend Jason at a bar called Valentines. It's a pretty hip joint, located right in the heart of donut alley, good foot traffic. Leading up to the show was chill ambient music, very soothing. Also let me say that I ate a few mushrooms earlier, nothin substantial, but was definitely feeling it throughout the night. This room has a very hip, cool vibe to it and I love the loft layout.
I ended up going up first, and really kind of just played around a bit. Made a bone thugs n harmony reference, which is always a good thing. I will probably keep that bit too. Also I knew quick one liner about Tom Hanks went well, so yeah pretty productive. I kinda flubbed the end of the set though, I told a joke I haven't told in awhile and forgot where I was going, but I think I gave a pretty organic looking show regardless. At one point in one of my darker, hospital bits, I reach the punchline and got very little chuckles but could hear someone audibly say Jesus Christ under their breath and that was really the highlight of my night. No actually the highlight of my night was watching Christian Ricketts close with my favorite cat penis joke. Yeah, Christians cat penis joke.
Helium...
Friday and Saturday night I got the host for Bryan Callen, and he is phenomenal! He had packed audience is for all four shows, and was killing it throughout. The feature, Doug Mellard was chill as fuck too.
All of my sets went fairly well. My best that was the 730 Saturday show, and my camera f***** up and didn't record it. Kinda bummed about that but whatever there will be more. I used my new homeless bit as a closer and it worked great. A lot of new material I got to play with at the beginning of the sets, trying to write quicker openers. Some of them work, some of them don't.

Dirty Dozen...
I have the pleasure of hosting a new showcase called The Dirty Dozen at Helium tonight! I will also be hosting for Bryan Callen, but for Thursday it is local comics, and it's a good lineup. Everybody's bringing the dirtiest material they have, I love this theme!
The crowd is huge, a lot of people show up, granted the tickets were free but still there had to have been a 150 people there. I open the show with 15 minutes of pretty dirty material, and then introduced the next 11 comics as they go up and watch them kill it. My set was fantastic. I did not even go half is dark is I could have, so next time I'll have to push it. Everybody had a great set, the crowd was with it! I see this as a huge success, so next time I'm definitely bringing the heat!

Helium and Fun House Lounge
Its Tuesday! And that means it's a Helium and Fun House kind of night, and to make it a little better, I am hosting all this week at Helium! I am fortunate enough to work with Bryan Callen, and look forward to what the week brings.
But tonight is about hosting the open mic, and I go out there with about 10 minutes of new material all less than a month old, and it hits more or less pretty solid. I will listen to my set and polish it up for the showcase, but as of right now I'm pretty happy. I get a couple of quick one liners in between a few of the comedians as they shuffled through the order, and was out of there by 9:45.
Also I finally grow a pair a balls and started talking to the management of the club in requesting dates and certain comedians to work with. And big news but still not 100 percent certain, I will be the regular host of The Dirty Dozen showcase every other Wednesday at Helium...and I will get to book it as well! I'm super happy to take this under my wing and show the club what I'm capable of. The management has put a lot of faith in me, letting me work there for the last year, and I feel like it's time for me to step up to that next level. I'm ready.
Then it was off to the Fun House Lounge for a nightcap so to speak. A solid crowd as usual, about 50 people. I go up to the host and ask if I could do a quick 3 minute set and they put me right on. It feels good to be in a place where people put faith into my work, and genuinely seem to respect me.
The set went great, I opened with some new bit about Doug Funny porn, and closed the with my new homeless bit which has been crushing. It feel so good to come up with a new two minutes of killer material that audiences really like.
In related news, they added a new room for the Fun House Lounge! A small, red lit room with an electronic fireplace... feels pretty baller.

Jack London Bar
hi headlined a new showcase called "Show me your wits!" and it was a pleasure! This room is pretty large, and held in the basement of the Rialto, a little giant pool hall in downtown. It's dark, and has a great basement comedy club feel to it. Has a small stage with the sound booth directly behind it is located right against the wall. With seating for about 50 and a nice bar along the back side as well.
I did a little over 30 minutes and the first 20 and change went over fantastic. I was really feeling the audience tonight, and throwing out some off the wall references. They were really into it, and I was really energetic. The last five or so minutes were a bit rougher, I got too comfortable and started throwing out old material that's just not up to par anymore. Plus I forgot my joke about feet, damn it jacob get your shit together! Besides the rough closer, this was definitely a fun fun show that I was proud to be part of!
Alberta Street Pub
I am at the alberta street pub tonight, for a little open mic action. This is a new venue, hosted by joanne, and I like it. You walkin via the main bar, and go through a set of swinging doors into a separate room with a small stage. Its a small room, holding maybe 40, and always well attended. Good sound system and stage lighting too! This is a great room to work out new material. And I did.
I had a new bit about cartoon porn... Sounds hack, because it is. But I get to talk about Hey Arnold porno so... & I worked out a new homeless joke too. This was productive, and fun.

SMUT
I had a nice time at the funhouse lounge last night for the smut showcase. It was a solid lineup with me, Alex Rios, Jonas Barnes, Todd Armstrong, and Lonnie Bruin headlining. Jonas Barnes knows how to pack an audience, the place was filled! I did 10 minutes and felt amazing, the crowd was ready for some dirty talk and I gave it to them. Todd went up after me and absolutely destroyed, seriously. And Lonnie headlined the show and did a fantastic job as you would expect. He brought back a lot of old material from his Cripple X tour and it was all killer.
Afterwards me and Alex stayed for the Snutty the clown open mic, and I did some really dirty stuff about the make-a-wish foundation, my liver transplants, and my long hair bit. All three jokes had my drumset as a call back, and it worked out pretty well. I need to dial that material in and make a nice 5 to 7 minutes bit combining at all. I will.
Also a little side note, funhouse lounge has expanded and has a new room with a fireplace!. That place is becoming the go to comedy spot, I love it.
After that me and Alex went to control yourself open mic and I had a pretty mediocre set honestly. But I was playing with some new material, & I got a good read on it. That's what an open mic is for after all. Plus James Adomian stopped in after his show at curious comedy theater and he did an awesome 5 minutes just playing with the mic stand. Definitely a great night for comedy!

Been a while...
I went back to Virginia for a couple weeks during Christmas to see my family. It was great to catch up, and I haven't spent that many days off stage in a row in years. I finally got some business cards made! It's about time. I got 250 of them, & I made the graphics myself on MS Paint. I am kinda proud of them.
When I got back to Portland, I had a weekend at Helium waiting for me. All 5 shows went great, I had some new material from Christmas break and I got to work out some new tags. The headliners were Adam Ray and Dan Soder. They co headlined and switched off every night. They are both great guys on and off stage.
I did a show with my friend Don frost out in the tri-cities area. It was an overnighter, in a hotel conference room, for a radio station. A nice four hour drive there and back, gave me plenty of time to talk Star Trek with Don. The show went great, I was worried at first because it was very light 30 minutes until showtime, but in that 30 minutes the place filled out. There were about 60 people there, and I went up cold with a very basic intro, and won that room over quick. I felt great getting off stage and watched as Don killed it. Plus I made a new fan, a very pretty one at that so yeah, that was a great night. We ended up doing some karaoke afterwards and I watched Don drink a dozen or so fireballs and get wasted. Good times.
I was booked at Harveys last week and did a fun Wednesday show, and then got snowed out for the rest of the week. Bummer. But this story has a happy ending, because I got booked the very next week! So I never really lost money or stage time this month, just a slight delay. The shows at Harveys went very well, Saturday all three shows were sold out and I performed in front of 800 plus people. The feature was Keith Ellis, and the headliner is Chas Elstner, both super friendly guys that know what they are doing on stage. Sunday I decided to eat some mushrooms before my show, not a lot, just enough to feel... tingly. That show was a blast, sold out as well, and everything felt amazing. I recorded the audio from all shows, and worked some new tags into some old jokes. Definitely a very productive weekend for me.
I will keep you updated more regularly if I remember...
